"I'm Mike Pence and I'm Pro-Life!"
Indiana Congressman Mike Pence is a hero to conservatives. The former radio talk show host is a rising star in Republican circles for his efforts to cut the federal budget.
His staff collects a growing stack of headline stories and profiles from national publications. The conservative weekly "Human Events" named Pence Man of the Year for 2005. Previous winners include the president, Supreme Court justices, and prosecutor Ken Starr.
"He has emerged as a national leader in the conservative movement and I think that he would be someone that conservatives around the country would really appreciate it if he moved forward to higher levels of leadership in the future, exactly what that will be, who knows?" said Terry Jeffrey, Human Events.
Human Events picked Pence as man of the year because of a September news conference where he and other conservatives called for budget cuts to offset hurricane relief. He took on the Republican leadership by doing so, and with a lobbying scandal brewing on Capitol Hill, it may take a Democrat to explain the wisdom of passing up the opportunity to join leadership.
All the headlines grow from the fact that Congressman Pence is a fiscal conservative. He is also a social conservative, something he points out every year here at the March for Life in Washington.
"We must never relent, we must never tire, we must never lose heart in the cause of life," he told the crowd, finishing his speech with, "I'm Mike Pence and I'm pro-life."
