Baron Hill: Mr. Abortion

In just a few days, Indiana voters will be going to the polls to elect new leaders, and I have reason to be both very concerned and very hopeful about where your candidates for U.S. House stand on the biggest moral issues of our daylife and marriage.

Let me be specific: One of your candidates—former Rep. Baron Hill—has taken conflicting and frequently disturbing positions on these key issues. One Internet writer commented on Hill's changing positions that, "Baron Hill wants to have a debate, but he could have a debate all by himself."

Take the issue of abortion, for instance. Baron Hill used to fashion himself as "pro-life," but now that would be a gross misrepresentation of his record. While he has occasionally cast a pro-life vote, much of his record is clearly pro-abortion.

For example, he voted to allow taxpayer funding of abortions overseas, taxpayer funding of abortions in federal health plans and taxpayer funding for chemically induced abortions. In short, if there is a vote to make you, the taxpayer, pay for abortions, Baron Hill almost invariably supports it.

But what about Rep. Hill's stance on marriage? The answer to that question depends on whether you believe his words or his actions. He says he believes in traditional marriage, but he hasn't lifted a finger to protect it. In fact, he has done just the opposite by opposing the one measure that would truly defend this institution against the attacks of gay radicals and activist judges. In 2004, he had the chance to demonstrate his commitment to traditional marriage, but instead he chose to vote against the Federal Marriage Amendment.

Fortunately, your other U.S. House candidate, current Congressman Mike Sodrel, has a very different track record, particularly on the sanctity of human life and marriage.

When it comes to life, there's no guessing where Rep. Sodrel stands. Not only does Mike Sodrel say he's pro-life, but he backs up his talk with a consistent pro-life voting record in the U.S. House. On every vote scored by the National Right to Life Committee, Mike Sodrel has voted to protect life. And, unlike Hill, he has voted every time to protect taxpayers from having to fund abortions. Equally important, his commitment to defending marriage from redefinition has been strong and backed up by action. This summer Rep. Sodrel voted in favor of the federal amendment that would protect marriage.

According to Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) , it’s painfully obvious President Bush continues turning a blind eye to the problem, thus violating his oath of office.

Democrats and Republicans share the blame equally. Democrats because they see illegals as future Democrats (forgetting that many of them are pro-life Catholics who therefore disdain the Democrat party,) while Republicans view them as cheap “coolie” labor

As of June 30, 2002, America’s prison population went over the two million mark, at a cost of $23,476.80 per year per prisoner. With over 25 percent of the prison population illegal aliens, that means Americans pay nearly $12 Billion dollars a year to house convicted felons who didn’t have the right to be in this country in the first place. Tancredo says, “Many who enter the country illegally are just looking for jobs, but others are coming to kill you, and you, and me, and my children, and my grandchildren.”

In April of 2005, Victor X. Cerda, acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement told the United States Senate, “We have a million individuals who are in some phase of immigration proceedings released.” Of these, according to Cerda, 465,000 are fugitive aliens who have been ordered deported. About 80,000 of those criminal aliens have committed an offense in addition to immigration violations.

In 1836, Captain William Travis drew a line in the sand at the Alamo, inviting the defenders to cross over the line and into the annals of greatness. All 189 inhabitants of the Alamo died, save on cowardly Frenchman (go figure) who escaped over the wall. Are you willing to cross over that line drawn by Congressman Tancredo today, or follow the cowardly Frenchman?

Scalia Rips Judges On Abortion, Suicide

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Deeply controversial issues like abortion and suicide rights have nothing to do with the Constitution, and unelected judges too often choose to find new rights at the expense of the democratic process, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said Saturday.

Scalia added, "The more your courts become policy-makers, the less sense it makes to have them entirely independent."

"The court could have said, 'No, thank you.' The court have said, you know, 'There is nothing in the Constitution on the abortion issue for either side,'" Scalia said. "It could have said the same thing about suicide, it could have said the same thing about ... you know, all the social issues the courts are now taking."

"It is part of the new philosophy of the Constitution," he said. "And when you push the courts into that, and when they leap into it, they make themselves politically controversial. And that's what places their independence at risk."

Justice Samuel Alito Jr., the newest member of the Supreme Court, agreed that "the same thing exists, but to a lesser degree, with the lower courts."

The High Prison Costs Of Criminal Aliens

Criminal aliens—non-citizens who commit crimes—are a growing threat to public safety and national security, as well as a drain on our scarce criminal justice resources. In 1980, our federal and state prisons housed fewer than 9,000 criminal aliens. By the end of 1999, these same prisons housed over 68,000 criminal aliens.1 Today, criminal aliens account for over 29 percent of prisoners in Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities and a higher share of all federal prison inmates.2 These prisoners represent the fastest growing segment of the federal prison population. Over the past five years, an average of more than 72,000 aliens have been arrested annually on drug charges alone. New issue paper.

The New York State Senate Committee on Cities estimates that the annual criminal justice costs for criminal aliens in New York is $270 million. The Committee has called for a national moratorium on immigration to help alleviate this problem.3 According to the Illinois Governor’s Office, Illinois spends over $40 million just on the incarceration of criminal aliens. The cost to Florida’s judicial and correction system for criminal aliens was $73 million in 1993. 4 In 1988, there were 5,500 illegal immigrants in California’s prisons. By fiscal year 1994- 1995, that is estimated to have increased to more than 18,000 illegal immigrants in state prisons—a three-fold increase. California taxpayers have spent over a billion dollars in the last five years to keep these convicted felons in prison, and the FY 9495 cost of incarcerating these offenders exceeded $375 million.5 The federal government has begun to reimburse heavily alien-impacted states for some of the costs of illegal alien prisoners in their state prisons. For 1996, Congress appropriated $300 million for this program.

Illegal Aliens Threaten U.S. Medical System

In fact, the increasing number of illegal aliens coming into the United States is forcing the closure of hospitals, spreading previously vanquished diseases and threatening to destroy America's prized health-care system, says a report in the spring issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons.

"The influx of illegal aliens has serious hidden medical consequences," writes Madeleine Pelner Cosman, author of the report. "We judge reality primarily by what we see. But what we do not see can be more dangerous, more expensive, and more deadly than what is seen."
According to her study, 84 California hospitals are closing their doors as a direct result of the rising number of illegal aliens and their non-reimbursed tax on the system.

In addition, the report says, "many illegal aliens harbor fatal diseases that American medicine fought and vanquished long ago, such as drug-resistant tuberculosis, malaria, leprosy, plague, polio, dengue, and Chagas disease."

While politicians often mention there are 43 million without health insurance in this country, the report estimates that at least 25 percent of those are illegal immigrants. The figure could be as high as 50 percent.

The Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons report includes a strong prescription for protecting the health of Americans:
  1. Closing America's borders with fences, high-tech security devices and troops.
  2. Rescinding the U.S. citizenship of "anchor babies."
  3. Punishing the aiding and abetting of illegal aliens as a crime.
  4. An end to amnesty programs.

WASHINGTON – The worst forms of a drug-resistant killer tuberculosis bug, rapidly spreading throughout the world, have been gaining ground in the United States along with record legal and illegal immigration levels, alarming public-health officials over a disease once thought vanquished.

The only visitors to the U.S. who are screened for tuberculosis and other medical conditions are immigrants who enter the country legally. There is no easy way to screen millions of tourists and illegal migrant workers.

In the U.S., 128 people were found to have it in 2004, a 13 percent increase from the previous year.

POW's Lawsuit Could Force Kerry To Come Clean On Vietnam 'War Crimes' Charges

When John Kerry slandered an entire generation of men who fought in Vietnam he branded them as "war criminals." Today, much of the same thing is being said about our young men and women in Iraq.

Now, a lawsuit filed in Philadelphia’s Court of Common Pleas will test the very foundation of Kerry’s anti-war persona for the first time. It isn’t dubious medals or Kerry’s disputed service record in Vietnam that is being called into question. This time Kerry may finally be forced to answer for the events that launched his public career, one that made him an anti-war hero for many American liberals and a turncoat for millions of Vietnam veterans.

The lawsuit (Vietnam Veterans Legacy Foundation, et al. v. Kenneth Campbell, et al.) challenges the basis, the factual accuracy of then Lt. (j.g.) Kerry’s acrimonious testimony before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1971. It was there Kerry’s public career was catapulted with his now ubiquitous portrayal of American soldiers as murderers, rapists and torturers "who ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam . . . [and] razed villages in a fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan."

For the anti-war, anti-American protesters, the American soldiers are the "terrorists," and the enemies are the victims of a barbaric U.S. military which tortures and murders defenseless civilians.

That false premise, one of the most vicious and enduring smears spawned by Kerry 35 years ago, will also be put to the test once Kerry’s true "Band of Brothers" are put under oath in a Philadelphia courtroom.

The background to this lawsuit is long and complex, but even a condensed version is rich in irony and poetic justice.

It had it roots in 2004 with the documentary Stolen Honor: Wounds that Never Heal. Many may recall the film, although it is probably best known for not being seen, suppressed after Sinclair Broadcasting Company courageously announced it was going to air the documentary in its entirety. Thanks to Kerry and his liberal colleagues in the Senate and their enablers in the mainstream media, Sinclair was browbeaten into withdrawing the film, its broadcast license threatened by a Kerry campaign manager in 2004. The film’s producer, Carlton Sherwood, a Pulitzer Prize and Peabody Award-winning investigative reporter, interviewed former POWs for the documentary.

I was among those whom Sherwood, a decorated Marine combat veteran himself, asked to participate in Stolen Honor. I was a POW for nearly six years, held in North Vietnam prison camps, including the notorious Hanoi Hilton, a place of unimaginable horrors — torture, beatings, starvation and mind-numbing isolation. When Kerry branded us "war criminals," he handed our captors all the justification they needed to carry out their threats to execute us. Thanks to Kerry, Jane Fonda and their comrades in the anti-war movement, our captivity was prolonged by years. The communists in Hanoi and Moscow couldn’t have had a better press agent to spread their anti-American propaganda.

To guarantee Stolen Honor would never be seen by anyone — not even theatre-goers — the producer was slapped with a libel and defamation lawsuit. That lawsuit was filed by a long-time anti-war disciple of the Massachusetts Senator. He was one of Kerry's key war crimes "witnesses," one of several on whom Kerry claims he based his Senate testimony.
The lawsuit put a unique spin on the definition of defamation, claiming that Stolen Honor had damaged the public reputations of himself, Kerry and others by simply quoting their own words and criticisms of America during the Vietnam war!

The POWs and the wives of POWs who participated in Stolen Honor refused to abandon the facts conveyed in the film. For some of us, it was the first time since our release by the Communists in 1973 that we were able to have our voices publicly heard, to tell our stories about the consequences of Kerry’s treachery. In 2005, we formed a nonprofit organization, the Vietnam Veterans Legacy Foundation (VVLF), to gather records, documents and other materials to form a fact-based, educational repository for students and scholars of Vietnam history and to tell the true story of the American soldiers in Vietnam. The VVLF’s mission is "to set the record straight, factually, about Vietnam and those who fought there."

For our efforts, we were promptly sued by two long-time anti-war Kerry followers and VVAW members. It was clear that Kerry not only wanted to punish us for Stolen Honor; he intended to use surrogates to sue us into permanent silence and financial ruin.

Forced to spend huge sums to defend ourselves from these frivolous lawsuits, we have filed a countersuit against these Kerry surrogates and intend to reveal the truth about the lawsuits and their sponsors. We believe that we can prove that the purpose of nearly two years of litigation was to protect John Kerry, to drain us financially and spiritually, and to prevent us from setting the record straight.

At stake is ultimately nothing less than the integrity of the American military in Vietnam, the honor of the men who served their country, the nobility of those who gave their lives, and the truth of America’s history in Vietnam. Until or unless we do correct the existing record, the American military may never be free of the myths and smears of Vietnam, its honor and integrity cleansed as it fights to defend freedom at home and around the world.

Our mission is hardly over. We hope you will join us in fighting this battle . . . for our soldiers, then and now. For more information about Vietnam, the foregoing litigation, or to make a donation, please access the VVLF website now — Go Here Now.

Congressman Mike Pence Returns To The Dickson/Chappell Report On November 4th

Rep. Pence was elected to Congress in November 2000 and was re-elected to the Sixth Congressional District, encompassing much of the eastern half of Indiana, in 2002 and 2004.

In September of 2004, Rep. Pence was unanimously elected Chairman of the House Republican Study Committee for the 109th Congress. The Republican Study Committee is the largest caucus in the House of Representatives, comprised of more than 110 House Republicans, and has been the leading voice for advancing conservative social and economic issues in Congress since the mid-1980's.

Rep. Pence has emerged as a national spokesman for conservative principles. In March of 2005, The Washington Post described Pence as "A New Face on Conservatism" observing, “he delivered conservative opinions with the even tones and polite demeanor of his Midwest upbringing.” In November 2005, Business Week described Pence as a "new power broker" and syndicated columnist George Will singled out Pence and Governor Mitch Daniels’ brand of conservatism as the “wave of the future." An April 2006 profile in U.S. News and World Report said Pence "has emerged as a powerful force, moving Congress further to the right."

"Do You Smell That?"

Please remember to keep The Portiuncula Franciscan Hermitage Retreat Center between your gas and electric bills:

"This past week someone shared with me the story of Dana Lu Blessing. I share it with you as we reflect on the awesome gift of human life.

"A cold March wind danced around the dead of night in Dallas as a doctor walked into the small hospital room of Diana Blessing. She was still groggy from surgery. Her husband, David, held her hand as they braced themselves for the latest news. That afternoon, March 10, 1991, complications had forced Diana, only 24 weeks pregnant, to undergo an emergency Cesarean to deliver the couple's new daughter, Dana Lu Blessing.

"At 12 inches long and weighing only one pound nine ounces, they already knew she was perilously premature. Still the doctor's soft words dropped like bombs. 'I don't think she's going to make it,' he said as kindly as he could. Numb with disbelief, David and Diana listened as the doctor described the devastating problems Dana would likely face if she survived.

"Because Dana's nervous system was essentially "raw" the lightest kiss or caress only intensified her discomfort, so for the first two months of her life her parents couldn't touch or cradle their tiny baby girl. Little by little this miracle child gained weight and strength. Five years later she was a petite and feisty little girl with no signs of physical or mental impairment.

"While her survival was a miracle, another miracle was revealed when Dana wasjust five years old. One afternoon in the summer of 1996 near her home in Irving, Texas, Dana was sitting in her mother's lap in the bleachers of a local ballpark watching her brother play baseball. She suddenly asked her mother, "Do you smell that?" "Yes," Diana responded, "it smells like rain." Dana closed her eyes and asked again, "Do you smell that?" Once again, her mother replied, "Yes, I think we're going to get wet. It smells like rain." Dana shook her head and announced, "No, it smells like Him. It smells like God when you lay your head on His chest." And off she ran to play with the other children.

"And Dana knew that during those long days and nights of her daughter's first two months of life when her nerves were too sensitive for anyone to touch her, God was holding Dana on His chest and it was His loving scent that she remembered.

"May Dana Lu Blessing never forget that scent and may we never forget God's love for His little ones both born and soon-to-be-born."

In God's love,

Fr. Todd Riebe
Richmond Catholic Community
