PALM BEACH, Fla. – A WND interview in which Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., called Miami a "Third World country" has ignited a war of words with Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and other lawmakers insulted by the remark, which is now being echoed in news media across America.

"Look at what has happened to Miami. It has become a Third World country," Tancredo told WND in a Nov. 19 story as he lamented how the nature of America can be changed by uncontrolled immigration. "You just pick it up and take it and move it someplace. You would never know you're in the United States of America. You would certainly say you're in a Third World country."

Washington, D.C. – Third Branch Conference (TBC), a coalition of over 100 grasstop leaders of center right organizations across the nation, today noted the announcement of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) not to run for President in 2008.

"He is a very good man diminished by a staff that was testicularly challenged and by Senate colleagues who are much dimmer lights. He would have been an important presence in the 2008 race and could still make a great running mate. I expect he will comeback another day because this guy has a genuine heart for public service," said Manuel Miranda, TBC chairman and former counsel to Leader Frist.

"As Majority Leader, Frist made history in his dedication of time to the debate over judicial nominations and helped prepare the way for someday returning the Senate to its proper constitutional role of giving or denying consent to federal court nominees with well-lighted debate and a fair, honest up or down vote. Frist was key to clearing the way for the confirmation of two constitutionalist Supreme Court justices," said Miranda.

"The Senate's stewardship over the courts was Leader Frist's signature issue. It gave Republicans the Senate majority in 2002, enhanced it in 2004, and its absence led to its loss in 2006. Unfortunately, Frist had poor counsel in surrendering on the courts in this past election year," Miranda said.

I wanted you to hear from me directly, before you heard it on the news.

Twelve years ago, I pledged to the people of Tennessee that I would serve two terms in the Senate - to serve as a true citizen legislator - and then return home. I said I’d come to the Senate with 20 years experience in healing, spend 12 years serving in Washington, then go right back to Tennessee to live where I grew up. And I will do just that.

That decision to self-limit my term was grounded then, and rests now, on a firm belief that change in public service and politics is healthy. That it fundamentally forces a perspective of purpose and a sharp focus on service and results. It reminds all participants that they just occupy a position for a period of time. And it liberates one to concentrate every day on serving those who are represented, not to preserve one’s own station.

I’ve known everyday for the last 12 years that I would spend two terms and no more in the legislative branch. The time for Karyn and me to leave Washington has arrived and we do so with great respect for the institution of the Senate and my colleagues, for our government, for our President, for our democracy, and for the principles of freedom and liberty upon which our country was founded.

People ask about the future for Karyn and me. What is next?

We are ready to return to Nashville and private life. We will seek the best opportunity to serve mankind. We will stay actively involved in formulating innovative solutions to the seemingly insurmountable problems that face Americans every day -- high cost of health care, energy dependence, the threat of radical Islam.

I may return to what I’ve done for most of my adult life: heal through medicine (the way I saw my dad serve since I was a little boy riding around with him, his black doctor’s bag tucked between us, as he’d travel the neighborhood making house calls).

I, of course, will immediately resume my regular medical mission trips as a doctor around the world to serve those in poverty, in famine, and in civil war. That is where my centeredness is fueled.

Politics is a noble occupation. Healing is a noble profession. Service to others underlies both. Karyn and I, and our three boys, now three young men, thank you for our opportunity to serve.

I look forward to continue working with you through VOLPAC. At the beginning of next year, we'll launch a revamped website and internet operation that refocuses our efforts in support of Republican candidates and centers our ongoing discussion on the challenges facing our country.

To keep the discussion going, I will also launch a national summit or series of summits focusing on important issues such as America’s dangerous dependence on foreign sources of energy and the high cost of health care.

I Didn't Come Here To Make Government Bigger

There can be little doubt that Governor Mitch Daniels is one of the most results-oriented administrators to fill the Governor’s chair in the Indiana State House. The number of long-overdue changes he has made to state government is commendable and the aggressive legislative agenda he put forth and accomplished in his first two years has been remarkable. His efforts seem to have set the state on a bright economic path and taken the government’s balance sheet from deep in the red into the black for the first time in years. Governor Daniels is certainly not afraid of tackling big issues.

However, in listening to some of his legislative plans following the election, I cannot get the historic words out of my head that Congressman Mike Pence told GOP Leadership and the White House. Early in his first or second term, Pence opposed the president’s Medicaid expansion plan and took a lot of heat for doing so. Yet, he simply said, “I did not come here (Washington) to make government bigger.”

I don’t think that Governor Daniels left Washington to come back to Indiana in order to make state government bigger. Still, in the last couple of weeks Governor Daniels has proposed a tax increase for a new state insurance program and a huge expansion of the government school system to the tune of a quarter-of-a-billion dollars per year!

On Monday, the governor laid down the gauntlet on full-day kindergarten, saying that a pilot program was unacceptable. He wants every school district to adopt a full-day kindergarten plan that starts ASAP and is “irrevocable.”

The research is from the National Center for Education Statistics Early Childhood Longitudinal Study. There simply is no other study like this one. Unlike many of the studies that seem to show academic benefits for FDK, this one does not suffer from small or non-random sampling of students. The ECLS-K study assessed 22,000 children entering kindergarten and followed them through the third grade. Again, this recent data set is the only one of its kind. Its large sample gave researchers a look at dozens of variables that impact student achievement and allowed them to control for the impact of different kindergarten programs. The study shows the same pattern documented by other lesser studies, which is that children in FDK programs have a modest academic edge over half-day students by the end of the year. However, that edge completely disappears by third grade. The “little meaningful difference” observed by the end of the year is all the more modest considering that FDK students spend twice as much time in school as their half-day peers, at great expense to the taxpayers.

Born Tatjana Matejas in Zagreb, Croatia, Tajci (TY-chee) grew up in what was then communist Yugoslavia. Raised in a musical family, she was singing with her father’s band when she was only four.

-- President Enrique Bolaños made the new ban on all abortions in Nicaragua official late Friday when he signed the measure the nation's legislature approved. Now the country officially joins a list of thirty-four nations across the globe that prohibit all abortions, although a pro-abortion legal challenge is probably in the works. The new law changes the country's abortion statute, which formerly allowed abortions in cases when the mother's life was in danger. Some pro-abortion advocates hoped Bolaños, a conservative whose term ends in January, would not sign the measure because the legislature did not increase prison terms for abortion practitioners or women having abortions. Current law calls for six years in prison for illegal abortions and Bolanos has wanted that increased to 30 years, which is different from American pro-life laws which consider women having abortions a second victim. For weeks, commentators have speculated that significant numbers of conservatives, alienated by over-spending, the Iraq War, and other perceived GOP disappointments, will stay home on Election Day, giving one or both Houses of Congress to Democrats.
