PENCE SPONSORS LEGISLATION TO PROVIDE RELIEF FROM HIGH GAS PRICES
One-Year Earmark Moratorium Would Fund Relief at the Pump
WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman Mike Pence announced today he is an original cosponsor of legislation to lower gas prices for Hoosier families. The Gas Tax Relief and Earmark Moratorium Act of 2008 would provide relief to American families and businesses from high gas prices with a three-month gas tax holiday that would be paid for by taking a reasonable and temporary timeout on earmarks.
"Hoosiers are struggling and frustrated every time they fill up their cars, trucks and tractors and it's time Congress took dramatic action to lower gasoline prices at the pump," said Pence. "This legislation would provide a temporary holiday from the federal gas tax from Memorial Day through Labor Day and would reduce the average cost of a fill-up at the pump by 18.41 cents a gallon. Congress must put relief at the pump over pork and pass a gasoline tax holiday and pay for it with a one-year moratorium on earmarks."
Pence noted that the bill fully pays for the three-month Gas Tax Holiday and protects the Highway Trust Fund by adopting a one-year moratorium on earmarks.
The bill also creates a Joint Select Committee envisioned by the Kingston-Wolf bill to make recommendations on how to fix the out-of-control earmarking process. This alone would save $14.8 billion and help make the earmarking process transparent and accountable to the American people.
Earlier this year, Congressman Pence declared a one-year moratorium on earmarks. Read his statement here<http://www.mikepence.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=86014> .
