Angel Food Ministries Reaches Hundreds of Airmen at Barksdale AFB

"RENEWING THE AMERICAN DREAM"

United We Stand

For Years it has been the desire of Angel Food Ministries to be able to give back to the men and woman who, through our military, defend the freedoms we share in the United States every day. This December we finally got the opportunity as we along with Operation Warm Heart hosted the first ever AFM distribution on a military base. More than 220 Air Force personnel and their families at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana received Angel Food.

“I’m just overwhelmed,” admitted AFM Founder and CEO Pastor Joe Wingo. “For so long, we have wanted to be on a military base, to help our Airmen. They give up their lives and guard with their lives. I think the very least we could do is something like this.”

Pastor Joe witnessed the distribution firsthand along with eight other AFM personnel. “When we first started Angel Food Ministries, we were just trying to feed the 34 families that came to our back porch,” Pastor Joe shared, reminiscing about the ministry’s 13-year history. “I never imagined that today we would be standing on an Air Force base feeding our military men and woman.”

The opportunity to distribute at Barksdale was the idea of Master Sergeant Chuck Profitt. After personally experiencing the advantage of receiving Angel Food, which his family had purchased through a local host site, Profitt knew Angel Food would be a benefit to the families at Barksdale.

“One of my jobs as a Master Sergeant is to look for opportunities, things that would benefit the Airmen,” Profitt explained, “and I got to thinking there’s got to be a way to get this in the hands of the Airmen.”

When the base’s other officers discovered the quality and value of the food provided, they knew Angel Food would be a great resource for the base’s men and woman. The holiday season, especially, can be a difficult time for military families as enlisted members are often serving abroad.

“I’m a single parent this year, and Angel Food really helps me out,” said Sergeant Rideout , one of those who took part in the distribution. “Money is tight, and I’m trying to buy Christmas presents for my kids.”

Second Bomb Wing Commander, Colonel Robert Wheeler understands the needs of the families at Barksdale, and he’s glad to work with an organization that shares the same goals as the US military. “It’s what Americans do; we take care of each other. That’s what makes us different from a lot of folks in the world. We go above and beyond, and we try to make a difference in the world.”

Of course, the Airmen themselves showed the greatest appreciation for Angel Food’s visit. They were grateful for the amount of food that they found inside their boxes. As an added benefit, Angel Food donated one dollar for each box purchased into Barksdale’s Operation Warm Heart Fund, a benevolent fund that serves the base’s Airmen.

“We applaud you for what you are doing,” Pastor Joe said to the Barksdale Airmen. “We love our country, and we want to do whatever we can to help you.”

Thank you to those serving at Barksdale Air Force Base. You have helped fulfill a dream for this ministry. This distribution was hopefully just the beginning of many more to our military personnel and our great country.
