Protest at Syracuse chancery office over closing of parish known for activism
In 2007, Bishop James Moynihan of the Diocese of Syracuse announced that he would close over 40 of the 172 parishes in the upstate New York diocese in the next few years. The closing of one of the parishes this Sunday prompted a protest outside the diocesan chancery office. The former parish was noted for its activism, including its outreach to the gay and lesbian community. The parish priest, who had concurrently served as pastor of two parishes, had told the bishop he was happy to continue the parish cluster arrangement.
