MSNBC: Mike Pence A White House Contender

Please Help Build The Portiuncula Chapel

Photobucket

Above photo is of the Portiuncula Chapel at the Franciscan University of Steubenville

To duplicate this Chapel, the Portiuncula Hermitage needs to raise $120,000

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It's times like these that tempt Catholics to throw in the towel and give up on the culture of despair.

Greed and corruption have wreaked havoc on our nation's economy. Euthanasia just received Washington State's stamp of approval. And all the pro-life victories of the past decade are now in jeopardy. It's the perfect storm for despair. But despair is the last thing we should do.

In troubled times, Christ calls us to pray, to trust in his perfect will, and to cooperate with his grace.

Ultimately, Christ calls us to hope. He calls us to remember that for Christians, peace does not rest on who wins an election or on the value of our stock portfolios, but in a loving God who “in everything...works for good.”

Of course, God doesn't just call us to hope. He gives us reasons to hope and signs of the good things to come.

I truly believe one of those reasons, one of those signs, is the Portiuncula Franciscan Hermitage and Retreat Center.

While many other Catholic institutions have sold out to the culture of death, the Portiuncula, along with a few others, has fought steadfastly for a culture of life. It has faithfully stood alongside the Church, forming men and women capable of true leadership and committed to bringing Christ to the culture.

But the "Portiuncula Chapel" can't be built alone. To continue building, we need your help! And that is why I'm writing you today: To invite you to join me in helping our culture through these troubled times by helping build the Portiuncula Chapel.

United in the Roman Catholic tradition and obedient to the Magisterium of the Church and the Bishop of Steubenville, we are committed to our Lord and Savior in the Scriptures, the Eucharist, the Sacraments of the Church and in our Brothers and Sisters.

With God's grace and your help, I believe past Portiuncula retreatants and those soon to follow in their footsteps will lead our culture and our country out of these troubled times.

That is why I invite you to share the work of these Catholics and the Portiuncula Hermitage that is forming them.

First, allow them to pray for you.

Prayer is the lifeblood of the Portiuncula Hermitage, and the Franciscan family would be honored to include you in their prayers. Please e-mail your most pressing intentions to: dicksoncorp@parallax.ws

Everyone at the Portiuncula will pray for your intentions before the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and at Mass.

In turn, please pray for the Portiuncula, that it might continue to form leaders who can be salt and light to our world.

Finally, I would be grateful if you supported the work of building the Portiuncula Chapel with a generous financial contribution.

Your support of the Portiuncula will make it possible for the sons and daughters of the Church to grow in faith during their retreats, and become the courageous Catholic leaders the world desperately needs.

Today, I want to challenge you to become a partner in the Portiuncula's mission to build the Portiuncula Chapel by donating $1, $5, $10, $25, $50, or more.

Please, become a part of the Portiuncula Hermitage's work today. Don't let this chance to turn the culture around pass you by.

Congressman Mike Pence Discusses Government Take-Over of Healthcare on MSNBC

Congressman Mike Pence "On The Record" with Greta Van Susteren Discussing Health Care Reform

Catholic Charities, St. Vincent DePaul Supporting Abortion-Providing Healthcare

"RENEWING THE AMERICAN Abortion Nightmare"

Washington, DC – Three of the top lay Catholic
organizations have divorced themselves from Catholic teaching by supporting
the Obama health-care plan, which would foster a culture of mandatory
abortion coverage, contraceptive services, and permissive sex education,
euthanasia and eugenics.

Catholic Charities USA, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the
Catholic Health Association are joining together to push the current
version of the plan through Congress.

"There is no social justice in rationing charity," said Judie Brown,
president of American Life League. "Millions of taxpayers will be forced to
subsidize abortion, contraception, euthanasia and bureaucratic denial of
health care to the poorest of the poor."

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Catholic Charities USA sent out an
action alert asking members to contact their legislators immediately:

We must maintain momentum for health care reform efforts with calls
and emails supporting health care reform immediately. ... Your members of
Congress need to hear from you that you support health care reform, and
that the system needs to be reformed now.

The Catholic Health Association put together a YouTube video showing
people displaying messages such as “I can’t wait for health-care
reform” and “We can’t wait until the signing ceremony.”

"All these organizations claim to be faithful to Catholic social teaching
– which unambiguously and passionately puts respect for human personhood
at the core of all other social and charitable works,” Brown pointed out.
“Yet these same organizations are undermining the very foundation they
exist to protect and foster: the dignity of human persons and the sanctity
of their right to life.”

American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the
largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and
is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment
of creation to natural death. For more information or press inquiries,

Breakthrough Will Eliminate "Need" To Destroy Human Embryos, Ethicist Hopes

"RENEWING THE AMERICAN DREAM"

Washington D.C., (CNA).- Two teams of Chinese researchers reported a medical breakthrough this morning, creating living mice from connective tissue that had been reverted to its embryonic state, a development that may eliminate the "need" to destroy human embryos for research.

Researchers accomplished this by first inducing the cells from the connective tissue to revert back to their embryonic state. This feat was first achieved two years ago, however researchers had never been successful in creating new living animals from these "induced pluripotent stem" (iPS) cells, raising questions about their developmental potential.

Results published today by the online journals "Nature" and "Cell Stem Cell" answer those questions, as scientists have shown that the iPS cells truly do function identically to embryonic stem cells. This proves that like embryonic stem cells, iPS cells are pluripotent, or able to develop into any type of cell, rather than simply multipotent, as adult stem cells are, only able to develop into a limited number of cells.

Fr. Tadeusz Pacholczyk, neuroscientist, staff ethicist, and director of education at the National Catholic Bioethics Center, explained to CNA that the breakthrough offers hope that iPS cells may be effective in providing an ethically acceptable alternative to human embryonic stem cell research.

"This procedure does not require the destruction of human embryos," Fr. Pacholczyk

said. "Therefore, it is certainly preferable to embryonic stem cell research."

"Nature" reports how researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shanghai Jiao Tong University successfully produced 27 live offspring, while the National Institute of Biological Sciences produced four. Some of the mice have successfully mated to produce hundreds of second and third generation mice, however some of the first-generation mice had abnormalities.

Due to these abnormalities and the large number of failures necessary to produce a few successes, scientists argued that the experiments were too dangerous to attempt on humans.

Pacholczyk stressed that such procedures would also be ethically unacceptable. "You would run into exactly the same set of concerns that human closing raises," he told CNA, explaining that such procedures were acceptable when applied to animals, but "absolutely unethical" for humans.

While the process used to create the mice is technically different from cloning, both yield an organism that is genetically identical to its cell donor. The Catholic Church opposes this artificial creation of life when applied to human beings.

However, while it cannot be ethically used to create new humans, iPS cells offer hopes for the ethical treatment of human diseases and other ailments.

In the realm of medicine, where the goal is not to create a new human being but to development treatment for an illness, iPS cells would provide an ethical alternative to processes that use embryonic stem cells, destroying human embryos in the process. ::MORE

Pro-Lifers Urged to Oppose Health Care Reform

"RENEWING THE AMERICAN DREAM"

Say Bill Is Stealth Version of Freedom of Choice Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Zenit.org).- Some 70 pro-life organizations hosted a live webcast to mobilize Americans to protest the health care reform package proposed by President Barack Obama.

The webcast, though it was organized in just a few days and held last Thursday, brought more than 36,000 viewers. Nineteen experts gave few-minute presentations on a weak aspect of the reform package.

E. Christian Brugger, of the Culture of Life Foundation, gave a 10-point summary of the main tenets of the presentation.

The major flaw in Obama's proposal, he explained, is not in what it says, but what it omits.

"Abortion is presently not mentioned in the bill. The bill does not specify what will and will not be covered," Brugger noted in his first two points.

He goes on to explain that the bill mandates that a "health care advisory committee" will have the authority to define the "essential benefits of coverage," that is, what will and will not be covered by taxpayer funds.

Therein lies the major flaw in the bill, given that this committee will be appointed by the Obama administration; they will not be elected officials.

The person most likely to head up choosing the appointees is the woman appointed by Obama as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, the former governor of Kansas who vetoed any pro-life legislation that arrived to her desk.

"Obama and Sebelius will be certain to appoint an advisory committee that supports abortion coverage in universal health care," Brugger affirmed. "Therefore, federally funded abortion will almost certainly become a mandated form of 'essential health care' if the bill passes in its present form.

"Every taxpayer will be forced to fund abortions. Presently enacted restrictions on abortion at the state level will be overridden. Hospitals and providers will be coerced into cooperating with abortions.

"FOCA [the Freedom of Choice Act] won't need to be passed because its cornerstones will be included in our nationalized health care."

The pro-life organizers urged listeners to take a five-step action plan in opposing the bill. They recommended prayer and spreading the word through social networking sites such as Facebook and twitter. They also encouraged listeners to contact legislators via email and post, and to reach them at their Washington offices.

Pontiff Defines Grandparents as Key Educators

Offers Blessing as Church Celebrates Mary's Parents

INTROD, Italy, (Zenit.org).- Noting the liturgical feast day of Jesus' grandparents, Benedict XVI today gave a special greeting and blessing to all the grandparents of the world.

The Pope mentioned grandparents and their role in education when he prayed the midday Angelus with faithful who gathered in Les Combes, where the Holy Father is vacationing until Wednesday.

Today the Church celebrates Sts. Joachim and Anne, Mary's parents.

"This feast makes us think about the topic of education, which has such an important place in the pastoral work of the Church," he said. "In particular, it invites us to pray for grandparents, who, in the family, are the depositaries and the witnesses of the fundamental values of life.

"The educational task of grandparents is always very important, and it becomes even more so when, for different reasons, the parents are not able to ensure an adequate presence to their children while they are growing up."

The Bishop of Rome entrusted "all the grandparents of the world" to the protection of Anne and Joachim, and gave them a special blessing.

"May the Virgin Mary," he concluded, "who, according to certain beautiful artistic renderings, learned to read sacred Scriptures at the knee of her mother, Anne, help grandparents to always nourish their faith and hope at the font of the Word of God."

Pence Amendment Passes Rules Committee

(L-R Dick Armey, Chris Dickson, Mike Pence)

"RENEWING THE AMERICAN DREAM"
PENCE AMENDMENT PASSES RULES COMMITTEE; SET FOR FRIDAY VOTE

Washington, DC – In a Thursday surprise, an amendment to
strip hundreds of millions of dollars from the nation's largest abortion
business is set for a Friday vote on the House floor.

The Pence Amendment to defund Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest
abortion chain, of Title X funding in the Labor/Health and Human Services
Appropriations Bill passed successfully through the House Rules Committee
late Thursday.

"In a time of economic crisis it makes no sense for the federal goverment
to spend millions of dollars killing millions of future taxpayers," said
Shaun Kenney, executive director of American Life League. "Why are the
American people forced to fund this vile organization? It's time our
legislators represent the will of the people against Planned Parenthood's
powerful Washington lobby."

U.S. Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) introduced the Amendment Tuesday which
states:

“None of the funds made available under this Act shall be available to
Planned Parenthood for any purpose under Title X of the Public Health
Services Act.”

American Life League motivated supporters around the country in the past
week to support the measure. ALL's STOP Planned Parenthood project is the
nation's largest watchdog organization dedicated to eradicating Planned
Parenthood in the United States.

“Millions of tax dollars are wasted each year fueling an organization
that promotes eugenics and protects sexual predators under the guise of
‘family planning’” said Rita Diller, national director of American
Life League’s STOP Planned Parenthood project.

Kenney agrees:

"Planned Parenthood is leeching off our impoverished ecomony while raking
in money hand over first," Kenney said. "Any legislator who votes to fund
Planned Parenthood is putting the lives of men, women and children at
risk."

Please Help Build The Portiuncula Chapel

Above photo is of the Portiuncula Chapel at Lourdes

To duplicate this Chapel, the Portiuncula Hermitage needs to raise $120,000

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It's times like these that tempt Catholics to throw in the towel and give up on the culture of despair.

Greed and corruption have wreaked havoc on our nation's economy. Euthanasia just received Washington State's stamp of approval. And all the pro-life victories of the past decade are now in jeopardy. It's the perfect storm for despair. But despair is the last thing we should do.

Congressman Mike Pence Offers Amendment To De-Fund Planned Parenthood

Joshua Bell: Something To Think About

Washington DC Metro Station on a cold January morning
in 2007. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes.
During that time approx 2 thousand people went through
the station, most of them on their way to work. After
3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician
playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few
seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later:
the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw
the money in the till and, without stopping, continued
to walk.

6 minutes:
A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him,
then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:
A 3 year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him
along hurriedly, as the kid stopped to look at the
violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child
continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This
action was repeated by several other children. Every
parent, without exception, forced them to move on.

45 minutes:
The musician played. Only 6 people stopped and stayed
for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to
walk their normal pace. He collected $32.

1 hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one
noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any
recognition.

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell,
one of the best musicians in the world. He played
one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with
a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before
Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the
seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito
in the metro station was organized by the Washington
Post as part of a social experiment about perception,
taste and people's priorities. The questions raised:
in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour,
do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it?
Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment
could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one
of the best musicians in the world playing some of
the finest music ever written, with one of the most
beautiful instruments ....

How many other things are we missing?

Obama: Abortion Funding Part of Health Care Reform

"RENEWING THE AMERICAN DREAM"

White House: Abortion Funding Part of Health Care Reform Debate

Washington D.C., (CNA).- The White House budget chief has said that he will not rule out whether a government-funded public health insurance proposal will allow taxpayer money to pay for abortions. Rather, the matter will be “part of the debate.”

The White House’s Office of Budget and Management Chief Peter Orszag, speaking to Fox News Sunday, said he is not ready to say whether abortion services would be part of a final taxpayer-funded health care package being considered by Congress for about one third of the 50 million uninsured Americans.

Speaking about abortion, he said “I think that that will wind up being part of the debate. I am not prepared to say explicitly that right now. It's obviously a controversial issue, and it's one of the questions that is playing out in this debate.”

“I’m not prepared to rule it out,” he added.

The health care reform bill is being debated in the U.S. House and Senate. President Barack Obama is seeking its passage by August. The package is estimated to cost as much as $1.5 trillion over ten years.

Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) said abortion should not be an issue in the debate since so many Americans oppose taxpayer-funded abortion.

“No matter what your views are on abortion, you shouldn't ask people to use their tax dollars if they think that abortion is taking a life -- to use their tax dollars for those purpose -- for that purpose,” he commented on Fox News Sunday.

“I would hate to see the health care debate go down over that issue,” he added. “So hopefully we won't get ourselves wrapped around the wheel of abortion in this debate.”

The Obama Administration and the Democratic Congress have already expanded funding for abortion and abortion-promoting groups. In January, President Obama rescinded the Mexico City Policy which bars funding for groups that promote or perform abortion overseas.

Last week the House voted to eliminate a ban on local funding for abortions in Washington, D.C. and to broaden the circumstances in which federal funds for abortions may be used in the District. ::MORE

Congressman Mike Pence: "Mr. President, Where Are The Jobs?"

Married Man and Woman "Gold Standard" in Child Rearing

"RENEWING THE AMERICAN DREAM"

Married Man and Woman "Gold Standard" in Child Rearing, Critics of British Official Say

London, England, (CNA).- Correction quickly came to an official with a British diocesan-funded marriage organization who claimed that married couples are no better than other family forms at raising children. His critics say the research is clear that a marriage of a man and a woman is the “gold standard” in child rearing.

Terry Prendergast, chief executive of Marriage Care, recently told the homosexual Catholic group Quest that children do best “in a family where the adult relationship is steady, stable and loving.”

“Note that I stress adult, not married, since there is no evidence that suggests that children do best with heterosexual couples,” he said.

His remarks claim that families “other than the married man, woman and added child” find themselves “discriminated against and denigrated.” Those in non-traditional families “attempt to live out good, Catholic lives whilst being judged and bracketed by those in authority, or those who appear to have reached the Kingdom already.”

Prendergast also claims that the government appears “much more pastoral and compassionate” by making many benefits available for “different family forms.” In his view, this suggests that “the state is even more concerned for families than Church [sic].”

According to the Catholic Herald, he also criticized ideas of the Holy Family which he said are rooted in “evangelical, right-wing religious thought.” He claimed abuse is “rampant” in the traditional family, citing the case of Joseph Fritzl, who repeatedly raped his daughter and kept her as prisoner over a long period of years.

A spokesman for the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales rejected Prendergast’s comments, saying they are “clearly not a reflection of the Church’s teaching, nor those of the Bishops’ Conference.”

“The Church's vision is that the crucially important quality of stability in family life needs gender complementarity and role modeling too,” he told the Catholic Herald.

Sociologist Patricia Morgan was also critical.

“I can't believe that someone has come out with this,” she told the Catholic Herald. "We've had 20 years of very well-controlled statistics and all the time we get this repeated conclusion: children do best educationally, behaviorally and in every other sphere when raised by two original biological, married parents.

"Problems tend to be two or three times as likely with single parents, and with step-parents it varies on whether they are married,” she continued. “Marriage is the gold standard.”

She added that child abuse is “massively higher” with lone parents and stepfathers.

The Centre for Social Justice this week released its report “Every Family Matters” on the family in Britain. It claimed that family break-up cost taxpayers billions of pounds every year and reported findings which showed that children brought up by married parents are uniformly more successful.

The report says British children in a “lone parent” family are 75 percent more likely to fail at school, 70 percent more likely to become a drug addict, 50 percent more likely to develop an alcohol problem and 35 percent more likely to experience unemployment and welfare dependency.

Further, 70 percent of young criminal offenders come from single parent families.

Such findings are replicated in the United States as well. An American College of Pediatricians article on marriage and the family explains:

“The positive impact of a married mother and father on a child’s development has been scientifically verified across all measures of well-being. The ideal family in which to rear and nurture children consists of two biological parents in a harmonious marriage.”

Congressman Mike Castle Hammered Over Illegal Alien Barack Obama

Barack (aka "Brokeback") Obama Will Be None Too Pleased Over This!

"RENEWING THE AMERICAN DREAM"

Maine Marriage Restoration Effort Collects Signatures and Half-million in Donations

Augusta, Maine, (CNA).- Marriage restoration advocates have raised almost $350,000 between June 3 and July 3 in their effort to return the state’s legal definition of marriage to being between a man and a woman. Their latest fundraising efforts have netted nearly $500,000.

The Maine legislature recently enacted a same-sex “marriage” law, which may be overturned by a “people’s veto” on the ballot. Supporters must submit 55,087 signatures to have the proposal placed on the ballot and to stop the law from going into effect in September.

Between June and July, Stand for Marriage Maine, the group spearheading the effort to defend traditional marriage, received $100,000 from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland from a special fund, which did not use church collections. The New Jersey-based National Organization for Marriage, which helped pass Proposition 8 in California, contributed $160,000.

Other donations from organizations included $50,000 from the Knights of Columbus, and $31,000 from the Focus on the Family Maine Marriage Committee.

However, the group only received $400 from individuals. Documents at MaineCampaignFinance.com showed all individual donors were Maine residents.

“It’s a long haul, but we’ve got a good start,” Mark Mutty, one of the group’s campaign leaders, told the Bangor Daily News.

Discussing the small number of individual donations, he said the group’s website has been up for less than two weeks. He predicted a significant increase in donors as the campaign advances.

He predicted his group would seek the “People’s Veto” with an amount of signatures “well in excess of the minimum” by early August.

An organization seeking to retain the same-sex “marriage” law, Maine Freedom to Marry, reported it raised almost $140,000 during the same period. Its leaders said more than $81,000 of that money came from Maine residents.

However, $50,000 of that donation total came from a single individual, Emergent Music CEO Diane Sammer. The anti-marriage group also received a $10,000 donation from the ACLU and a $25,000 contribution from the Human Rights Campaign.

Documents at filed with the state showed that just under half of the individual donors for the group were from out of state.

“This campaign is going to win because we have extraordinary grass-roots support from regular Mainers,” said Jesse Connolly, Maine Freedom to Marry’s campaign manager. He said the group expected to be outspent by “those who would deny lesbian and gay couples the right to marry.”

“This is an issue that speaks to people’s hearts,” he said.

Speaking to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network, Stand for Marriage’s Mutty said he regretted the amount of money required for the campaign.

"Certainly it's a shame that this kind of money has to go into these kinds of efforts, but that's the nature of the beast these days. These campaigns cost a lot of money and you can't prevail unless you're competitive."

Mystic Monk Coffee: Order Through Portiuncula And Donate To Birthright (a loving alternative to Abortion)

"RENEWING THE AMERICAN DREAM"

Please order your Mystic Monk Coffee through the Portiuncula Hermitage. Ten percent of all their Commission Sales is donated to Birthright (a loving alternative to abortion.)

The Carmelite Monks of Wyoming

Mystic Monk Coffee is roasted by the Carmelite Monks, a Roman Catholic monastery in the silence and solitude of the Rocky Mountains of northern Wyoming. The monks live a hidden life of prayer and contemplation in the pursuit of God. The monastery is inundated with young men who seek to leave everything to pray for the world, in a tradition at least a thousand years old. It is the monks’ great joy and privilege to share the fruit of their life with you in every cup of Mystic Monk Coffee.

The Monk Master Roaster

Br. Java is the master roaster who meticulously roasts beans in small batches. His philosophy is that each roast must be not only the labor of his hands, but a master roast of the highest quality. Br. Java is passionate about obtaining the perfect roasts for you. He carefully roasts only the finest gourmet beans under conditions that will make each roast consistent and smooth with a taste that will make your taste buds tingle. With experience and perfection, Mystic Monk Coffee is a coffee to savor and enjoy – with or without cream.

The Legend of the First Mystic Monk

Coffee is a product perfected and loved by monks from its beginning. When a monk of old heard the anguished tale of a shepherd who had sleepless goats, he himself discovered growing on shrubs the berries, which had such a wonderful affect. Delighted at his find, the ingenious monk boiled the beans in water and drank the resulting coffee. He found in his discovery a hot drink that could keep his eyes awake even amidst the midnight vigils and unceasing prayers of the monastic life.

The secret of coffee continues to keep monks ever alert and vigilant for their prayers, but now Mystic Monk Coffee shares the hidden, master roasts of monks with all who seek a delightful cup of coffee.

Monks are passionate Perfectionists

The monastic life is one of ordered perfection, which you will taste in every bag of Mystic Monk Coffee. Passionate about perfection, no challenge is too great for Br. Java and the monks, if it will result in a Mystic Monk brew suited for the most discriminating coffee drinker. The Carmelite monks have mastered the ancient art of roasting coffee, laboring with steadfast determination to make each cup of coffee simply superb. Taste the monastic perfection in each brew, which makes all the difference.

Please remember that when you buy Mystic Monk Coffee through the Portiuncula Hermitage, ten percent of all their commission sales is donated to Birthright (a loving alternative to abortion.)

Please remember to keep our Pre-born in your daily prayers!

The Carmelite Monks tell us, "Our Rule explains that as monks we need to earn our keep by the work of our hands. We were praying about what sort of product most people utilize on a daily basis, and it came to us that everyone needs coffee to start the day. On our side of things, roasting coffee can be very contemplative. It only takes one monk to run the roaster and bag the coffee, so it is very complimentary to our life.

"All the brothers have worked together to perfect the Mystic Monk roasts, from the selection of beans, to the creation of special blends, to the final roasting. We will have many types and flavors of coffee, all available in full one-pound bags. Our selection will include Columbian, Dark Roast, Costa Rican, Guatemalan, Sumatran, Ethiopian, Mexican, Breakfast Blend, Hazelnut, French Vanilla, Irish Cream, Carmel, Chocolate Mint, Chocolate Raspberry, and Royal Rum Pecan."

Mystic Monk Coffee

The double-handed mug is our special Carmelite mug that we use in the refectory. It is an old custom in Carmel that we drink using two hands as a sign of gratitude for the gifts of food that God provides from our benefactors. Similar mugs, complete with the Mystic Monk logo, will also be available for purchase.

Now this being a Carmelite order and the esteem we hold for Elijah I do wish they had a Zarepath blend. One where the bag of coffee beans never runs out like the flour and oil of the widow of Zarepath, but I guess that wouldn't be a wise business decision. Or possibly a blend based on the brown scapular, though it would be always out of St. Simon Stock.

I am really interested in the Carmel blend they have. Unfortunately they don't have a decaf version, which of course should be called "Carmel Light."

Deep in the hearts of these monks there is a profound loyalty to the Magisterium of the Church. Like their holy parents, St. Teresa and St. John of the Cross, they wish to always remain "loyal sons of the Church." They firmly embrace and accept each and every definition that has been set forth and declared by the unerring Magisterium of the Holy Catholic Church. They will forever remain firmly united to the Holy Father, the Supreme Pontiff and Shepherd of the Church of Jesus Christ, and the Bishops united to him. They are also determined to always remain in loyal obedience to their immediate shepherd, the Bishop of Cheyenne.

"Bean there, done that"...

Plans Begun for Teresa of Avila's 500th Birthday

Carmelites Appoint Commission for Saint's Celebration

ROME, (Zenit.org).- A commission of Discalced Carmelites is already preparing for the celebration of the 5th centenary of the birth of St. Teresa of Jesus, which will be celebrated in 2015.

The celebration for the saint, also known as St. Teresa of Avila, will be directed by this commission, which was appointed after an initiative of the order's general chapter.

The Carmelite vicar general, Father Emilio Martínez, will head the commission and will be assisted by Father Alfredo Amesti, a press release on the order's Web page reported.

The executive committee will coordinate various topical sections of activities.

The section for community projects will prepare study aids for each of St. Teresa's books as well as dynamics and activities to help individual, community, and lay reading of these works.

The pastoral projects section will organize activities with a special focus on young people, including the upcoming World Youth Day in Madrid in 2011.

The task of the cultural projects section will be the organization of seminars, conferences and other academic activities in collaboration with the Teresianum College in Rome, the International Teresian-St. John Center of Avila and other Carmelite institutes.

"RENEWING THE AMERICAN DREAM"

Oldenburg’s Freudenfest to be July 17-18

Oldenburg’s Freudenfest has been described as “the biggest little German festival in Indiana,” reports committee volunteer Paul Selkirk.

“The atmosphere is reminiscent of Octoberfest in Germany,” he admits. “It gets bigger and bigger every year.”

Please drop by "In His Image" Christian Bookstore on Saturday! I will be there helping Eric give out free cups of our "Mystic Monk Coffee."
All the fun happens Friday-Saturday, July 17-18, near the town hall on Pearl Street (please see complete schedule in the box.)

Volun-teer Troy Ilderton encourages people to attend the “fun, family festival .... Many use it as a homecoming and time to visit .... People like to be in Oldenburg because it’s a very scenic place.”

Committee volunteer Karen Enneking is excited about the live auction Friday night. Many items have been donated. She reveals one of the most unique: a dirndl, a German outfit.

Live entertainment is a given. The Cincinnati band Pros’t performs Friday evening. The group “draws a big crowd .... This night used to be just for the locals and workers, but has grown so much over the last few years,” Enneking notes.

On Saturday, two funny guys named Die Doppel Adler Musikanten German Band arrive from Indianapolis, taking the stage several times. Batesville’s popular community ensemble, the Eureka Band, rounds out the sound. Indy’s Die Fledermauchen Tanzgruppe dancers perform twice.

Dinners include roast beef or fried chicken; sauerkraut; German potato salad or mashed potatoes; sausage and sauerkraut; green beans; slaw or applesauce. Lighter fare also is for sale: brats, metts, rib eye, barbecue pork and reuben sandwiches and desserts.

About 10 different imported beers will be available. “They are very popular price-wise and taste-wise,” adds Selkirk.

Athletes can walk, bike and/or jog Saturday. The early morning 10-K is a leisurely stroll through the countryside. Two distances of bike rides are scheduled, with cyclists departing at 8 a.m. Participants should meet in front of the town hall and wear helmets. For the $15 entry fee, they receive a T-shirt. Anyone under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

A free 1-mile fun run for children begins in late afternoon, followed by a 5-kilometer race. The Freudenthon will challenge the most physically fit. To win, one must complete the 10K walk, 20-mile bike ride and 5K and have the best 5K time.

“I applaud anyone who can do all three events on a hot day .... They often go unrecognized,” Enneking announces.

Patrons who want to be part of the Dress for the Fest German Costume Contest are welcome to come prepared as judges will be walking around the fest to determine the winners.

The amateur photo contest is back. Pictures can “be anything at all .... as long as they were taken in or of Oldenburg,” says coordinator Cheryl Webber. They can be any size from 4-by-6 to 8-by-10.

There is a limit of two entries per person. All photos must be turned in by Wednesday, July 16, at 4 p.m. at The Village Store. There is no entry fee.

Please drop by "In His Image" Christian Bookstore on Saturday! I will be helping Eric give out free cups of our "Mystic Monk Coffee."

The Death Of America

"RENEWING THE AMERICAN DREAM"

At about the time our original 13 States adopted their new Constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinborough, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic, some 2,000 years prior:

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time voters discover that they can vote themselveds generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship."

He goes on to say, "The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

From bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back to bondage."

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning the Gore/Bush Presidential election:

Population of Counties won:
by Gore: 127 million
by Bush: 143 million

Square miles of land won:
by Gore: 580,000
by Bush: 2,427,000

Sates won:
by Gore: 19
by Bush: 29

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won:
by Gore: 13.2
by Bush: 2.1

Professor Olson adds, "In aggregate, the map of territory Bush won was (mostly) the land owned by the tax-paying citizens of this great country. Gore's territory encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements..."

Although America's run at Democracy has exceeded the 200 year average, Olson believed the U.S. was then somewhere between the "apathy" and the "complacency" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of Democracy; with some 40 percent of the nation's population already having reached the "government dependency" phase.

So here we are now, in 2009, and what have we seen? The government take-over of the banks and automotive companies in America; Obama fired the President of General Motors; Cap and Trade (Cap & Tax) , driving up the cost of energy by $2000-$3000 per household; Universal Healthcare with absolutely no way of paying for it; the National Debt raised to over one Trillion Dollars with no accountability as to where the money went or was spent; New York City's combined tax rate of 67 percent. Need more proof? Then watch this:

America is now on "life support" and probably won't survive the next four years !

Study: U.S. Leads in Private, Charitable Giving

"RENEWING THE AMERICAN DREAM"

Donations Sustaining Developing Countries

WASHINGTON, D.C., (Zenit.org).- As Benedict XVI urges developed nations to stop cutting aid to less developed ones, a study notes that private giving is actually on the rise, especially in the United States.

The Washington-based Hudson Institute affirmed this in its 2009 Index of Global Philanthropy and Remittances.

The report, released in April, notes that private giving and remittances are expected to be "lifelines" to help developing countries during the financial crisis.

The institute's Center for Global Prosperity measured philanthropic giving across the globe, and stated that the latest data shows an increase of $49 billion given in 2007 to help developing countries.

It stated that despite "the loss of assets in 2008, giving abroad by foundations, corporations, charities, churches, and individuals is not expected to take a sharp downward turn in 2009."

The institute added that the "secret weapon" in the global recession may be remittances.

These are monetary gifts sent from migrants living in developed countries back to their families and towns in developing areas, which may be "the most recession-resilient means to help alleviate poverty."

The institute added that in spite of the economic recession, remittances increased 9% to an estimated $305 billion in 2008.

It cited the World Bank's prediction that although this amount began to decline in 2009, it will not decrease more than 5%-8% this year.

Significant force

Generally, private global giving is rising around the world, and is a "significant force" that is changing the traditional "government aid architecture."

The index stated, "New models of philanthropic giving, championed in the United States, are being taken to new heights by companies" and private organizations.

"Social entrepreneurs and venture philanthropists are helping millions of people in the developing world start their own companies and create jobs for others," it added.

In the United States, $115.9 billion in private donations were recorded, which is more than five times the official public aid amount of $21.8 billion.

Of this, foundations gave $3.3 billion, corporations donated $6.8 billion and private and voluntary organizations gave $10.8 billion.

U.S. volunteers gave approximately $3.5 billion worth of volunteer time for development aid abroad.

Religious organizations and churches gave $8.6 billion to help developing countries.

Africa received the bulk of the private aid from corporations and charities, while Latin America was given the majority of aid from religious organizations and churches.

The institute noted that technology has advanced charitable giving, describing a "Twestival" fundraising event using Twitter.

As well, it acknowledged facilitating Internet programs for giving donations and cell phone technology that enables migrants to send money home easier.

Bombshell: Orders revoked for Army Officer challenging Obama's Eligibility

"RENEWING THE AMERICAN NIGHTMARE"

Major victory for Army warrior questioning Obama's birthplace

By Chelsea Schilling and Joe Kovacs
© 2009 WorldNetDaily

A U.S. Army Reserve major from Florida scheduled to report for deployment to Afghanistan within days has had his military orders revoked after arguing he should not be required to serve under a president who has not proven his eligibility for office.

His attorney, Orly Taitz, confirmed to WND the military has rescinded his impending deployment orders.

"We won! We won before we even arrived," she said with excitement. "It means that the military has nothing to show for Obama. It means that the military has directly responded by saying Obama is illegitimate – and they cannot fight it. Therefore, they are revoking the order!"

She continued, "They just said, 'Order revoked.' No explanation. No reasons – just revoked."

A hearing on the questions raised by Maj. Stefan Frederick Cook, an engineer who told WND he wants to serve his country in Afghanistan, was scheduled for July 16 at 9:30 a.m.

Join the petition campaign to make President Obama reveal his long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate!

"As an officer in the armed forces of the United States, it is [my] duty to gain clarification on any order we may believe illegal. With that said, if President Obama is found not to be a 'natural-born citizen,' he is not eligible to be commander-in-chief," he told WND only hours after the case was filed.

"[Then] any order coming out of the presidency or his chain of command is illegal. Should I deploy, I would essentially be following an illegal [order]. If I happened to be captured by the enemy in a foreign land, I would not be privy to the Geneva Convention protections," he said.

The order for the hearing in the federal court for the Middle District of Georgia from U.S. District Judge Clay D. Land said the hearing on the request for a temporary restraining order would be held Thursday.

Want to turn up the pressure to learn the facts? Get your signs and postcards asking for the president's birth certificate documentation here.

Cook said without a legitimate president as commander-in-chief, members of the U.S. military in overseas actions could be determined to be "war criminals and subject to prosecution."

He said the vast array of information about Obama that is not available to the public confirms to him "something is amiss."

"That and the fact the individual who is occupying the White House has not been entirely truthful with anybody," he said. "Every time anyone has made an inquiry, it has been either cast aside, it has been maligned, it has been laughed at or just dismissed summarily without further investigation.

"You know what. It would be so simple to solve. Just produce the long-form document, certificate of live birth," he said.

Feast Day of St. Bonaventure of Bagnoregio

St. Bonaventure

Monday, July 15 is the feast day of St. Bonaventure. A Doctor of the Church and a Franciscan Friar, St. Bonaventure had an eventful life. He was a theologian and a philosopher from Bagnoregio (Italy). Born in 1221, he died on July 15, 1274 in Lyons (France). His full Christian name was Giovanni di Fidanza. A mystery arises surrounding Giovanni’s name change to Bonaventure. We have no definitive solution to this query, but we do have a legend that emphasizes Franciscan continuity.

St. Francis of Assisi

It is said that when Giovanni di Fidanza was a baby he was very sick. Desparate to save their child, Giovanni’s parents brought him to Francis of Assisi who uttered the exclamation, “O buona ventura” or “Oh, good fortune.” Thus cured through the interecession of Francis of Assisi, Giovanni became Bonaventure.

Bagnoregio

Although the above story cannot be proved, it works very well on an inspirational level. The Conventual Franciscans today do their best to reflect the Franciscan way of life in everything that they do. They refer to Francis and all other friars not as a historical figures from the near or distant past, but as brothers who are alive and with God today. This sense of connection through time strongly suggests a respect for history. By remembering the past, Franciscans try to learn from it, always keeping in mind their vocation to serve God by serving their communities.

Congressman Mike Pence Speech To Congress On Broadcaster Freedom Amendment

Encyclical’s Pro-life Content Shouldn’t Ignore, Says Catholic League President

New York City, N.Y., (CNA).- Some political groups citing the Pope’s new encyclical “Caritas in veritate” are neglecting its content on issues like bioethics and pro-life matters, Catholic League President Bill Donohue has said.

Noting that Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good has advised Catholics to suggest their pastor give a homily “highlighting the Pope’s reflections on social justice and the common good,” Donohue claimed that this excluded the Pope’s encyclical comments on several important issues. He listed topics like the sanctity of human life, bioethics, the “indiscriminate acceptance” of all lifestyles, sexuality “as a form of entertainment” and the role of religion in the public square.

Citing the encyclical's counsel that respect for life compels us to broaden our “concept of poverty,” Donohue said people should be prepared to think of abortion as a poverty issue.

“The best way to service the poor, according to the Pope, is not to create bureaucratic monstrosities that cripple the dignity of the indigent,” he added, also highlighting the Pope’s warning against “paternalist social assistance.”

“In other words, the tried and failed, dependency-inducing welfare programs that mark the social policy prescriptions of the poverty industry are seen by the pope as a disaster. Not exactly what those who work for HHS want to hear,” Donohue’s Thursday statement continued.

“Finally, when the pope slams greed and criticizes a market economy shorn of moral principles, he is hardly upsetting most of those who champion the rights of the unborn. But some stereotypes are hard to break.”
