Scozzafava the Abortionist Suspends NY23 Campaign!

MIKE PENCE:
RECLAIMING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY
AND
THE AMERICAN DREAM

Republican Dede Scozzafava has suspended her bid in next Tuesday’s NY 23 special election, a huge development that dramatically shakes up the race. She did not endorse either of her two opponents -- Conservative party candidate Doug Hoffman or Democrat Bill Owens.

The decision to suspend her campaign is a boost for Hoffman, who already had the support of 50 percent of GOP voters, according to a newly-released Siena poll, and is now well-positioned to win over the 25 percent of Republicans who had been sticking with Scozzafava.

Scozzafava has “probably made her last campaign appearance between now and Election Day,” spokesman Matt Burns told POLITICO. “She’s releasing her support to the two other candidates."

"I had a discussion with her last night, and we made the decision after I spoke with her. We talked about it, what this came down to was spending. It came down to the ability to defend herself from the get-go. And that’s the reality. She was unable to define herself where the people didn’t know her."

POLITICO has the full story on Scozzafava's surprise decision here.

Scozzafava's statement:

Dear Friends and Supporters:

Throughout the course of my campaign for Congress, I have made the people of the 23rd District and the issues that affect them the focal point of my campaign. As a life long resident of this District, I care deeply and passionately about its people and our way of life. Whether as a candidate for Congress, a State Assemblywoman or a small town Mayor, I have always sought to act with the best interest of our District and its residents in mind—and today I again seek to act for the good of our community.

The opportunity to run as the Republican and Independence Party candidate to represent the 23rd District has been and remains one of the greatest honors of my life. During the past several months, as I’ve traveled the district, meeting and talking with voters about the issues that matter most to them, I’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of support I’ve received as I sought to serve as their voice in Washington. However, as Winston Churchill once said, Democracy can be a fickle employer, and the road to public office is not always a smooth one.

In recent days, polls have indicated that my chances of winning this election are not as strong as we would like them to be. The reality that I’ve come to accept is that in today’s political arena, you must be able to back up your message with money—and as I’ve been outspent on both sides, I’ve been unable to effectively address many of the charges that have been made about my record. But as I’ve said from the start of this campaign, this election is not about me, it’s about the people of this District. And, as always, today I will do what I believe serves their interests best.

It is increasingly clear that pressure is mounting on many of my supporters to shift their support. Consequently, I hereby release those individuals who have endorsed and supported my campaign to transfer their support as they see fit to do so. I am and have always been a proud Republican. It is my hope that with my actions today, my Party will emerge stronger and our District and our nation can take an important step towards restoring the enduring strength and economic prosperity that has defined us for generations.

On Election Day my name will appear on the ballot, but victory is unlikely. To those who support me – and to those who choose not to – I offer my sincerest thanks.

STATEMENT ON USCCB DIRECTIVE AGAINST OBAMACARE

"RECLAIMING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AND THE AMERICAN DREAM"

MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
29 October 2009

STATEMENT ON USCCB DIRECTIVE AGAINST OBAMACARE

Washington, DC (29 October 2009) – American Life League’s
Judie Brown, a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life,
issued the following statement on the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops’ national campaign
mobilizing every parish to oppose abortion in health
care reform and demand conscience protections for health
care workers.

“We applaud the USCCB’s unprecedented action in its national
campaign to mobilize parishes against the current versions
of the health care bill. It has taken an important first step
in activating Catholics to take back our health care system
and our country from the radical pro-aborts in the
legislature and sometimes even in the pulpits.

We proudly stand with the USCCB in its statement: “Health care
reform should be about saving lives, not destroying them.”

But we remind the USCCB that Catholics cannot stop at opposing
abortion and demanding conscience protection. Where is the
USCCB on the health care reform bills’ potential to fund Planned
Parenthood, to use our tax dollars to indoctrinate children with
sex education in schools, to fund euthanasia, in vitro
fertilization, human embryonic stem cell research, contraception
and health care rationing?

All of these things are present in all of the current versions
of the health care bill. None of these are acceptable according
to Catholic teaching. All Catholics are duty bound to reject
“health care reform” if it contains any of the above grievous
offenses against human life and personhood.

Catholics need to know why, at every level, these proposals are
fraught with death and destruction of the soul.

Finally, Catholics need to know that the USCCB, acting of itself,
carries no authority to instruct the bishops on the governance of
their flocks. It is imperative that each and every bishop make a
public statement condemning these health care proposals until they
exclude any provisions for:

-abortion
- human embryonic stem cell research
- contraceptives
- rationed care
- in vitro fertilization
- euthanasia
- sex education in schools

The God-given personhood of all human beings will be recognized
in the United States the moment the united, individual U.S.
Catholic bishops boldly proclaim and fight for the unchanging
doctrines of the Faith."

1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic
pro-life organization in the United States and is committed
to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment
of creation to natural death. For more information or press
inquiries, please contact Katie Walker at

Andrea Bocelli Sings "Brother Sun and Sister Moon" before Pope Benedict XVI

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

Among other words used in ordinary conversation, Francis could never hear 'FOR THE LOVE OF GOD' without a kind of transformation within himself. For immediately upon hearing 'FOR THE LOVE OF GOD,' he would become excited, stirred, and inflamed, as though an inner chord of his heart had been plucked by the plectrum of the outward voice of the speaker.

Dr. Tom Ringenberg during personal prayer time at the
Portiuncula Hermitage in Jerusalem, Ohio

Dear Christian Brothers and Sisters,

Having just experienced one of the most peaceful and fulfilling weekends of my Christian life, I feel led to write you and encourage you to take a fresh breath of the clean air at the Portiuncula Retreat in Jerusalem Ohio. Surrounded by the beauty of God’s creation in the hills of Appalachia, I was refreshed in God’s peace.

The initial reaction to a weekend of silence, fasting and prayer was mixed as I revel in the world’s flash of media and the madness of twenty-four hour news. I feared boredom and the lack of external stimulus. But God is good, and He provided plenty for me. Walks in the woods and fields, silent prayer and meditation, communal prayer with my Brothers in Christ, prayers of intercession, and theological discussion on the travel to and from Jerusalem, stimulated my spirit far more than my flesh has ever been stimulated.

It is my hope that the Portiuncula will become a haven for those who need a fresh touch of God. I will return soon to restore my soul with peace.

Please prayerfully consider joining me "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD" in supporting the Portiuncula Retreat Center by simply contributing $5.00 $10.00 $15.00 or more a month.

It is the monks’ great joy and privilege to share the fruit of their life with you in every cup of Mystic Monk Coffee.

The Monk Master Roaster
Br. Java is the master roaster who meticulously roasts beans in small batches. His philosophy is that each roast must be not only the labor of his hands, but a master roast of the highest quality. He carefully roasts only the finest gourmet beans under conditions that will make each roast consistent and smooth with a taste that will make your taste buds tingle. With experience and perfection, Mystic Monk Coffee is a coffee to savor and enjoy – with or without cream.

The Legend of the First Mystic Monk
Coffee is a product perfected and loved by monks from its beginning. When a monk of old heard the anguished tale of a shepherd who had sleepless goats, he himself discovered growing on shrubs the berries, which had such a wonderful affect. Delighted at his find, the ingenious monk boiled the beans in water and drank the resulting coffee. He found in his discovery a hot drink that could keep his eyes awake even amidst the midnight vigils and unceasing prayers of the monastic life.

The secret of coffee continues to keep monks ever alert and vigilant for their prayers, but now Mystic Monk Coffee shares the hidden, master roasts of monks with all who seek a delightful cup of coffee.

Monks are passionate Perfectionists
The monastic life is one of ordered perfection, which you will taste in every bag of Mystic Monk Coffee. Passionate about perfection, no challenge is too great for Br. Java and the monks, if it will result in a Mystic Monk brew suited for the most discriminating coffee drinker. The Fear And Love Of God Has Died Out In Our Country

When the people heard St. Francis and his brothers preach, they said: "Who are these men, and why do they speak like this?" They made this comment because at the time the fear and love of God had died out in the country and no one spoke of penance which indeed was considered folly.

The Clergy Who Want an Abortion Ba'al Out

"RECLAIMING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AND THE AMERICAN DREAM"

By Robert Knight

Did you know that the Priests of Ba'al Coalition has weighed in on the health care debate? Okay, they don't really call themselves that. Ba'al was the god of ancient pagan tribes that sacrificed babies in fertility rites and whom the children of Israel defeated to advance Western civilization at its founding. But the aforementioned group does refer to themselves as "clergy" and "religious professionals" who demand abortion on demand, in a quite demanding way. "An Open Letter to Religious Leaders on Abortion as a Moral Decision" was released on Sept. 30 and signed by more than 1,100 "religious leaders." It's the usual suspects like trendy Episcopalian priestesses and the Americans United for the Separation of Church and State's Rev. Barry Lynn. Other signers include Frances Kissling of Catholics for a Free Choice and assorted reverends affiliated with Planned Parenthood or the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.

Morehouse College Bans Cross-Dressing

"RECLAIMING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AND THE AMERICAN DREAM"

The story

An all-male college in Atlanta, Georgia, has banned the wearing of women's clothes, makeup, high heels and purses as part of a new crackdown on what the institution calls inappropriate attire.

No dress-wearing is part of a larger dress code launched this week that Morehouse College is calling its "Appropriate Attire Policy."

The policy also bans wearing hats in buildings, pajamas in public, do-rags, sagging pants, sunglasses in class and walking barefoot on campus. Read full article »

Can You Afford $5.00 A Month?

Photobucket

Photo of the Portiuncula Chapel at the
Franciscan University of Steubenville

To duplicate this Chapel, the Portiuncula Hermitage needs to raise $120,000

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It's times like these that tempt Catholics to throw in the towel and give up on the culture of despair.

Greed and corruption have wreaked havoc on our nation's economy. Euthanasia just received Washington State's stamp of approval. And all the pro-life victories of the past decade are now in jeopardy. It's the perfect storm for despair. But despair is the last thing we should do.

In troubled times, Christ calls us to pray, to trust in his perfect will, and to cooperate with his grace.

Ultimately, Christ calls us to hope. He calls us to remember that for Christians, peace does not rest on who wins an election or on the value of our stock portfolios, but in a loving God who “in everything...works for good.”

Of course, God doesn't just call us to hope. He gives us reasons to hope and signs of the good things to come.

I truly believe one of those reasons, one of those signs, is the Portiuncula Franciscan Hermitage and Retreat Center.

While many other Catholic institutions have sold out to the culture of death, the Portiuncula, along with a few others, has fought steadfastly for a culture of life. It has faithfully stood alongside the Church, forming men and women capable of true leadership and committed to bringing Christ to the culture.

But the "Portiuncula Chapel" can't be built alone. To continue building, we need your help! And that is why I'm writing you today: To invite you to join me in helping our culture through these troubled times by helping build the Portiuncula Chapel.

United in the Roman Catholic tradition and obedient to the Magisterium of the Church and the Bishop of Steubenville, we are committed to our Lord and Savior in the Scriptures, the Eucharist, the Sacraments of the Church and in our Brothers and Sisters.

With God's grace and your help, I believe past Portiuncula retreatants and those soon to follow in their footsteps will lead our culture and our country out of these troubled times.

That is why I invite you to share the work of these Catholics and the Portiuncula Hermitage that is forming them.

First, allow them to pray for you.

Prayer is the lifeblood of the Portiuncula Hermitage, and the Franciscan family would be honored to include you in their prayers. Please e-mail your most pressing intentions to: dicksoncorp@parallax.ws

Everyone at the Portiuncula will pray for your intentions before the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and at Mass.

In turn, please pray for the Portiuncula, that it might continue to form leaders who can be salt and light to our world.

Finally, I would be grateful if you supported the work of building the Portiuncula Chapel with a generous financial contribution.

Your support of the Portiuncula will make it possible for the sons and daughters of the Church to grow in faith during their retreats, and become the courageous Catholic leaders the world desperately needs.

Today, I want to ask you to become a partner in the Portiuncula's mission to build the Portiuncula Chapel by simply donating $5.00 $10.00 $15.00 a month.

PORTIUNCULA FRANCISCAN HERMITAGE/RETREAT CENTER

ON LINE DONATION

Please, become a part of the Portiuncula Hermitage's work today. Don't let this chance to turn the culture around pass you by.

Worldwide Fatima "Sanctity of Life" Day

Don't Miss Sunday's All-Day Special Event

EWTN to Air Worldwide Fatima “Sanctity of Life” Day

As times grow darker and the culture of death seemingly becomes more pervasive, the forces of life are joining together to petition the one woman to whom Our Lord never fails to listen – His mother and ours – under the title of Our Lady of Fatima.

Join people of all faiths the world over as EWTN airs “One World Praying: Worldwide Fatima Sanctity of Life Day,” Sunday, Oct. 18 live from the Blue Army Shrine of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Washington, N.J.

The world will join together on this day to pray for an end to war, abortion, terrorism, genocide, child slavery, assisted suicide and all other instances where death is chosen as a solution to world problems.

The event – organized by the World Apostolate of Fatima/Blue Army, USA to inspire 100 million prayers for life and peace – will begin at 11 a.m. ET with a welcome and rosary procession.

This will be followed by Holy Mass at noon ET, inspiring songs by Christian Musician Tony Melendez and his band at 1:30 p.m. ET, talks by internationally renowned speakers Fr. Andrew Apostoli, CFR at 2:15 p.m. ET, World Apostolate of Fatima USA Executive Director Michael La Corte at 3 p.m. ET, and Fr. Clement Machado, SOLT, at 4 p.m. ET. The rosary in song will round out the day at 4:45 p.m. ET.

Our Lady of Fatima appeared to three shepherd children in Portugal in a series of apparitions beginning May 13, 1917 and ending Oct. 13, 1917. She asked that the faithful make reparation for their sins, say the rosary, and cultivate a devotion to her Immaculate Heart.

“I have come to ask the faithful to amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins,” Our Lady of Fatima said. “They must cease offending God, who is already too much offended.”

(For more information about Fatima, go to www.ewtn.com/fatima. For information about how to say the rosary, go to www.ewtn.com/devotionals/prayers/rosary/)

Fr. Apostoli noted that after the Pope consecrated Russia to Mary, as she had requested, there was a period of peace following the Cold War. “The Berlin Wall came down without bloodshed; the Soviet Union disintegrated. Prayer has spiritual power. There is an old saying that there are than people imagine.”

Fr. Macado agreed. “The more we experience trials and tribulations in the present age, the more we experience Our Lady's maternal intercession,” he said. “She will crush the head of the ancient serpent and, in the end, her Immaculate Heart will triumph.”

Become part of this important event by watching the events on EWTN and praying with the world – and register your prayers online at www.wafusa.org. The goal is 100 million prayers for life and peace.

Saint Teresa of Avila Feast Day

Bernini's St. Teresa of Avila

Saint Teresa was born in Avila in Spain in 1515. She joined the Carmelite Order, made great progress in the way of perfection and enjoyed mystical revelations. When she reformed the Order, she met with much resistance, but she succeeded with undaunted courage. She also wrote books filled with sublime doctrine, the fruit of her own spiritual life. She died in Avila in 1582.

Father,
by your Spirit you raised up Saint Teresa of Avila
to show your Church the way to perfection.
May he inspired teaching
awaken in us a longing for true holiness.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Controversy Erupts as Catholic Bishop Asks Pro-Gay Bishop Not to Enter His Diocese

"MIKE PENCE: RECLAIMING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AND THE AMERICAN DREAM"

By Peter J. Smith

MARQUETTE, Michigan, October 13, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A public controversy has erupted between two bishops of the Catholic Church in the United States, with one of the youngest bishops in the country publicly taking on one of his own colleagues in an effort to defend the Church's teachings on homosexuality and other issues.

Marquette Bishop Alexander K. Sample, 49-years-old and one of the youngest US Catholic bishops, recently banned Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, 79, a retired auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit and notorious promoter of homosexuality, contraception, and homosexual and women's ordination, from entering and speaking in his diocese, citing his pastoral duty to defend the "faith and morals" of the Catholic Church. The controversial bishop was set to address the group Marquette Citizens for Peace and Justice.

"As the Bishop of the Diocese of Marquette, I am the chief shepherd and teacher of the Catholic faithful of the Upper Peninsula entrusted to my pastoral care," said Bishop Sample in a public statement. "As such I am charged with the grave responsibility to keep clearly before my people the teachings of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals."

"Given Bishop Gumbleton's very public position on certain important matters of Catholic teaching, specifically with regard to homosexuality and the ordination of women to the priesthood, it was my judgment that his presence in Marquette would not be helpful to me in fulfilling my responsibility."

The elder prelate, who once held the title of Vicar General of Detroit, counts himself as a member of radical heterodox groups such as New Ways Ministry and Call to Action, both of which have been censured by the Vatican for moral and doctrinal reasons, especially over the promotion of homosexual behavior as a valid normative lifestyle. Members of Call to Action are also excommunicated in one US diocese and the group agitates for contraception, abortion, divorce and remarriage, and change in the governmental structure of the Church.

Gumbleton's career as an active and well-known "liberal" prelate came to an abrupt end in 2006, when the Vatican denied his request to continue on as Auxiliary Bishop to Detroit Cardinal Adam Maida upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75.

For his part, Sample made clear that banning Gumbleton had nothing to do with either Marquette Citizens for Peace and Justice or the topic of Gumbleton's speech, which concerned the matter of peace and justice.

Instead, the deciding factor, said Sample, was the potential for Gumbleton to mislead members of his diocese on Church teachings through discussions and interactions either tangential or unrelated to the topic of Gumbleton's speech.

"I was concerned about his well-known and public stature and position on these issues and my inability to keep these matters from coming up in discussion," added Sample. "In order that no one becomes confused, everyone under my pastoral care must receive clear teaching on these important doctrines."

Sample stated that he regretted the public controversy, but made clear that Gumbleton had put him in that position by neglecting "common courtesy" between bishops, which requires them to ask permission before entering the diocese of another bishop. Instead, Gumbleton had informed Sample of his intention to speak at the event organized by Marquette Citizens for Peace and Justice on October 9, after the upcoming event was made public.

However, this is not the first time that Gumbleton has been banned from a diocese in which informing the local ordinary of his presence was an afterthought.

In 2007, bishop Gerald F. Kicanas banned Gumbleton from entering his jurisdiction after he discovered that Call to Action had arranged for him to speak at Catholic churches and schools in the diocese.

For pro-life and pro-family leaders - both inside and outside the Catholic Church - Sample's stand against Gumbleton is being interpreted as a sign of hope and a reminder of a generational changing of the guard within the Catholic Church.

Gumbleton is almost 39 years senior to Sample, and represents an aging and shrinking demographic of US bishops whose heterodox opinions were formed in seminaries during the 1950s and who were active in ministry during the cultural upheaval of the 1960s and 70s.

Sample, on the other hand, represents a younger class of bishops formed during the papacy of John Paul II that have trended toward taking up the challenge of defending orthodox teachings on morals, doctrine, and liturgy.

"The bishops aren't sworn to each other, they are sworn to obey the gospels," veteran pro-life leader Joe Scheidler of the Chicago-based Pro-Life Action League told LifeSiteNews.com. Scheidler added that bishops nevertheless often do act like members of a "unique club" generally protecting each other and not talking about each other in public.

"But if a bishop is so bad" like Gumbleton, said Scheidler, "If they are doing something that is causing something that is causing scandal, it takes a strong bishop to call them on the carpet."

Archbishop Chaput Gives Vatican Dose of "Humble Realism" on Barack Obama and Notre Dame Scandal

ROME, (LifeSiteNews.com) - Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver has given Vatican prelates a gentle dose of "humble realism" about President Barack Obama and the Notre Dame scandal - in order to help them appreciate better the American bishops' grave pastoral concerns over a President whose lofty words diverge sharply from his actions on abortion and other issues.

In a July essay "Politics, Morality, and Original Sin," published in the international Catholic journal 30 Days, Cardinal Georges Cottier, a Swiss theologian and former member of John Paul II's papal household, appeared to downplay the pastoral concerns of the American Bishops over President Barack Obama giving the commencement address to the University of Notre Dame's Class of 2009 and receiving an award.

Cottier instead suggested that Obama's words in his Notre Dame address offered "positive indications" of a desire to find "common ground" on the issue of abortion, and that "his words move in the direction of reducing the evil" by seeking to make "the number of abortions as small as possible."

However, Chaput's delicate rebuttal, "Politics, Morality, and a President: an American View" published Tuesday in the Italian daily, Il Foglio, and made available through the Catholic News Agency, responds to Cottier and makes the case that President Obama's own actions tell the truth far better than his words before an audience.

While praising Cottier for "his generous spirit," Chaput indicated that Cottier may have been overgenerous, since the US President's stance on abortion and other "vital bioethical issues" compromises the teachings and demands of Catholic social justice to their core.

"Regrettably and unintentionally, Cardinal Cottier's articulate essay undervalues the gravity of what happened at Notre Dame," writes Chaput. "It also overvalues the consonance of President Obama's thinking with Catholic teaching."

"There is no 'social justice' if the youngest and weakest among us can be legally killed. Good programs for the poor are vital, but they can never excuse this fundamental violation of human rights," said Chaput, addressing those in "religious circles" who see Obama as sympathetic to Catholic social teaching.

"The real source of Catholic frustration with President Obama's appearance at Notre Dame was his overt, negative public voting and speaking record on abortion and other problematic issues," said Chaput.

Chaput said that the Notre Dame scandal erupted largely due to the fact that the university went out of its way to honor the President, violating guidelines put forth by the bishops in the 2004 document "Catholics in Political Life." Those guidelines urged Catholic institutions like Notre Dame "to refrain from honoring public officials who disagreed with Church teaching on grave matters." Instead of abiding by the guidelines, Notre Dame threw the counsel of the American bishops to the wind, made the President the "centerpiece of its graduation events" and then bestowed on him an honorary doctorate of laws, "despite his deeply troubling views on abortion law and related social issues."

Chaput explained that that such public honor from Notre Dame exacerbated the conflict into a full-fledged, enduring scandal, far beyond anything that might have occurred had the President merely been invited to give "a lecture or public address."

The firestorm that ensued, Chaput stressed, "was not finally about partisan politics."

"It was about serious issues of Catholic belief, identity and witness - triggered by Mr. Obama's views - which Cardinal Cottier, writing from outside the American context, may have misunderstood."

Chaput made clear that Vatican officials and Church clerics outside the US might want to respect first the pastoral concerns of the American bishops and local ordinaries, before coming to conclusions at odds with the gravity of the actual circumstances.

"When Notre Dame's local bishop vigorously disagrees with the appearance of any speaker, and some 80 other bishops and 300,000 laypeople around the country publicly support the local bishop, then reasonable people must infer that a real problem exists with the speaker - or at least with his appearance at the disputed event," concluded Chaput.

"Reasonable people might further choose to defer to the judgment of those Catholic pastors closest to the controversy."

Chaput's defense has prompted expressions of gratitude from some of those American Catholics, already distressed that much of the commentary on the Notre Dame scandal issuing from Vatican circles - including L'Osservatore Romano - has tended in effect (if not in intention) to undermine the stance taken by the American bishops and laity, by mitigating those concerns and giving the impression that the American response was an overreaction.

"We are grateful to Archbishop Chaput for explaining to the world why faithful American Catholics were so outraged at Notre Dame for honoring President Barack Obama last May," said Patrick J. Reilly, President of The Cardinal Newman Society. "The more than 367,000 faithful Catholics who signed The Cardinal Newman Society petition opposing that honor held diverse political views, but they joined together as witnesses to 'serious issues of Catholic belief, identity and witness,' as Archbishop Chaput explains."

House Republicans Press Obama on Jobs Creation

Dick Armey, Chris Dickson, Congressman Mike Pence

"RECLAIMING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AND THE AMERICAN DREAM"

John D. McKinnon reports on politics.

House Republicans sent a letter to President Barack Obama today, pushing the administration to seek more business tax breaks as a way to boost the number of new jobs.

With unemployment rates still climbing around the country, Republicans are trying to position themselves as the champions of job creation.

Democrats, including Obama administration officials, have been in discussions for weeks about their own ideas, including extending some expiring provisions from the February stimulus bill, such as the tax break for homebuyers, and creating a few new breaks, such as expanded deductibility of business losses.

Some advocates are also floating the idea for a broad-based employment tax credit, which had been dropped from the February stimulus bill.

Republicans say in their letter that they’re hoping to work with the White House toward a bipartisan jobs plan. But they use some tough language – calling the February stimulus “unsuccessful,” and urging Democrats to drop their “job-killing” health care reforms.

In the letter they’re sending to the White House later today, House Republican leaders tout various members’ proposals that would:

–Give small businesses a tax deduction equal to 20% of their income.

–Let small businesses band together in associations to buy health insurance more cheaply.

–Curb civil lawsuits.

–Lower individual income tax rates.

–Expand health savings accounts, which are being squeezed in some of the current health-care reform proposals.

–Increase businesses’ ability to recover current losses by refiling prior tax returns.

The text of the letter follows:

October 7, 2009

President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President:

We write today to express our desire to work with you to enact policies that will help small businesses get back on their feet and create jobs, and to highlight some of the solutions put forth by Republicans that we believe can serve as the basis for bipartisan action toward this goal.

Last Friday marked a grim milestone for our country, as the national unemployment rate reached 9.8 percent, the highest level in 26 years. It is now evident that the massive “stimulus” spending bill enacted months ago has been unsuccessful. Washington borrowed a trillion dollars from our nation’s children and grandchildren for this legislation, which was supposed to create jobs and keep the national unemployment rate from rising above 8 percent. Instead nearly 3 million private sector jobs have been lost in America since the “stimulus” was signed into law, and the national unemployment rate is nearly 10 percent, and rising.

Small businesses are bearing the brunt of these losses. According to the http://www.adpemploymentreport.com/pdf/FINAL_Report_September_09.pdf ADP National Employment Report released September 30, employment among small businesses (those with fewer than 50 workers) declined by 100,000 from August to September, while employment declined by 61,000 among large businesses and by 93,000 among medium-sized businesses during the same period. The American people are right to ask: where are the jobs?

The engine of job creation in America is small business, not government. Since the beginning of the year, Republicans have put forth solutions that reflect an understanding of this fact, which was lost last winter in Democratic-controlled Washington’s rush to enact a “stimulus” bill based on slow-moving and wasteful government spending.

In the time since the unsuccessful “stimulus” was enacted, the Administration and Congress have focused most of their collective attention on the goals of enacting a government takeover of health care and a new “cap and trade” national energy tax. In their current form, both of these bills would inflict further harm upon small businesses and eliminate millions of additional American jobs if enacted. Employers throughout the country are watching, and the job-killing policies on the horizon are causing them to freeze their planning and hiring. We respectfully urge you to scrap these job-killing bills and start over, this time working with Republicans for responsible legislation that will help small businesses.

In the hopes of facilitating such bipartisan action, here are some of the solutions Republicans have put forth to help small businesses get back to creating jobs:

• Allow small businesses to take a tax deduction equal to 20 percent of their income. This will immediately free up funds for small businesses to retain and hire new employees.

• Let small businesses join together to purchase health insurance for their workers the way large businesses and labor unions do.

• Enact genuine legal reform and policies that incentivize wellness to reduce health care costs for small businesses.

• Lower taxes for all taxpayers by reducing the current 15 percent rate to 10 percent and reducing the current 10 percent rate to 5 percent. This will provide an immediate increase in income to every taxpaying family in America and free up capital to help small businesses hire more workers.

• Expand health savings accounts (HSAs) to provide additional flexibility to small businesses in providing health care to their employees.

• Increase the net operating loss carry back from 2 to 5 years to provide struggling employers with additional resources to keep their doors open.

These proposals, developed by the House GOP Economic Recovery and Health Care solutions groups, were presented for your consideration earlier this year. We respectfully ask again that you consider them for the purpose of helping small businesses get back to creating jobs. The Economic Recovery Solutions Group is also developing additional proposals that will be sent to the White House soon for your consideration. We stand ready to work with you to enact these and other common-sense solutions for the American people.

Sincerely,

House Republican Leader John Boehner
House Republican Whip Eric Cantor
House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence
House Republican Policy Committee Chairman Thaddeus McCotter
House Republican Conference Vice Chairman Cathy McMorris Rogers
House Republican Conference Secretary John Carter
National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Pete Sessions
Rules Committee Ranking Republican David Dreier
Chief Deputy Whip Kevin McCarthy
Congressman Roy Blunt
